FAQ

Aerogel, explained simply.

Answers to common questions about our products, possible uses and how to get started.

Our aerogel

The basics

What is aerogel and what does it do?

Aerogel is a very light material with tiny air pockets that slow the movement of heat. It helps keep things warmer or cooler for longer and can be added to other materials to improve insulation.

What types of aerogel do you supply?

Our range includes water-repellent silica aerogel granules, an aerogel-and-binder dry mix, and water-absorbing aerogel powder without binder. The right choice depends on how you want to use it. Explore our product range.

Can I mix it with water?

Our aerogel-and-binder dry mix is designed for the customer to add water. The other grades behave differently, so ask us which product and preparation method suit your application. Follow the mixing guidance for the specific grade.

Using aerogel

Where it could help

Where can aerogel be used?

Potential uses include building materials, clothing, transport, industrial equipment and temperature-controlled containers. The starting point is a product or space that needs to keep heat in or out. Explore applications.

Can it be plastered or sprayed on?

Aerogel can be part of a suitable plaster, render or coating mixture. The mixture and application method need to suit the surface and the equipment being used. Tell us what you want to cover and we can discuss an approach.

Does aerogel expand like foam?

No. Aerogel itself does not expand. If it is added to a foam or another material, the behaviour of that mixture depends on the other ingredients and the process.

Product information

Choosing the right material

How much insulation will I need?

That depends on your temperature goals, available space, the amount of aerogel in the mixture and the other materials involved. Share these details with our team so we can discuss a suitable approach.

Is all aerogel water-repellent?

No. Our hydrophobic grades repel water, while our hydrophilic grade absorbs it. Selecting the right grade matters when developing your product.

Where can I get technical and handling information?

Visit Technical Information for an overview of the range. For product-specific datasheets, safety documents or mixing guidance, send an enquiry with the grade and intended use. Assess the finished product as a whole, rather than relying on powder figures alone.

Samples & enquiries

Starting a conversation

Can I request a sample?

Yes. Tell us what you want to make, how you plan to use the sample and where it would be sent. Our team can discuss the appropriate grade, quantity and delivery arrangements.

How do I enquire about price or bulk supply?

Use our Distribution & Bulk Supply page to tell us the product, quantity, delivery location and timing you have in mind. We can discuss a quote based on your requirements.

What should I include in my enquiry?

A short description of what you are making and what needs to stay warm or cool is a good start. Include the materials involved, likely quantity, location and timing if you know them. You do not need a complete technical brief to contact us.
